Car in a ditch or in the water

In Friesland there is water next to almost every road. If a car leaves the road, it can easily end up in a ditch, a waterway or a canal. Is everyone out of the car and safe? Then we get the car out, day and night.

Safety first

Is someone still in the car? Call 112

Has a car ended up in the water with someone still inside, or is someone injured? Call 112 immediately. The emergency services always come first. We come afterwards for the recovery, often in consultation with the police and fire service.

Are you out of the car and is everyone safe? Stay away from the water and call 058 30 30 125. Don't try to pull the car out of the ditch yourself.

Our approach

Lifted out of the ditch by crane

A car in a ditch is often tilted or partly under water. With the crane on our recovery truck we lift it out in a controlled way, without causing extra damage to the car or the bank. Is the car further from the road? Then we use the winch.

We then load the car onto the recovery truck. It is best not to start a car that has been in the water, as water in the engine or the electronics can then cause a lot of damage. We take the car to a garage of your choice, the dealer or our storage facility.

What we recover from the water includes

  • Cars that have ended up in a ditch next to the road
  • Cars in a waterway, canal or lake
  • Vans and motorhomes that have left the road
  • Trucks and agricultural vehicles in a ditch (heavy-duty recovery)

How it works

How we get a car out of a ditch

1. Safety and 112

If there is danger or anyone is injured, always call 112 first. Then call us, or the police will call us in.

2. Tell us where

Give us the town, the road and which side of the road the car is on. Then we know which equipment to bring.

3. Crane or winch

We lift or pull the car out of the water and put it on the recovery truck.

4. To its destination

We take the car to your garage, the dealer or our storage facility and tell you what the next steps are.

Frequently asked questions

Should I call 112 first if my car is in the water?

Yes, if someone is still in the car, someone is injured or there is any danger. Then call us for the recovery. The police often call us in themselves as well.

Can I still start my car after it has been in the water?

Better not. Water in the engine, the fuel or the electronics can cause a lot of damage when you start it. Have the car checked by a garage first.

Who pays for recovering a car from a ditch?

That usually goes through your car insurance. Many policies cover towing after an accident, even if you only have third-party (WA) cover. This varies by policy. We are happy to sort it out with your insurer.
