BCF Mobiliteit van and heavy recovery truck next to a truck stuck on the verge

What to do

Stuck on the verge: how to stay safe

Switch on your hazard lights and put on a high-visibility vest. Is the car at an angle or partly on the road? Then get out on the safe side and stand behind the crash barrier or well away from the road.

Don't keep accelerating. Spinning wheels dig deeper into the verge and the car can sink further. Pulling it out with another car or a tractor without the right equipment can also damage your car.

Our approach

Back onto the road in a controlled way

Our recovery trucks have a winch. We use it to pull your vehicle slowly and straight back onto the paved road, while our truck stays on firm ground. Can the car still be driven afterwards? Then you can usually carry on straight away.

Is the car damaged, or is it stuck too deep? Then we load it onto the recovery truck and take it to a garage of your choice or to our storage facility.

Situations we help with include

  • Cars with one or more wheels sunk into the verge
  • Vehicles stuck in the mud on a farmyard, in a field or in a car park
  • Motorhomes and vans that have left the paved road
  • Trucks sunk into a soft verge (heavy-duty recovery)

How it works

How we recover a vehicle from the verge

1. Call us

Tell us where you are: town, street or road number and, if possible, a hectometre marker or house number.

2. We're on our way

The nearest recovery truck comes to you from one of our four locations.

3. Pulling free

We winch the vehicle back onto the road and check whether it can safely carry on.

4. On your way or to the garage

Can the car no longer be driven? Then we take it to a garage of your choice or to our storage facility.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get my car off the verge myself?

Sometimes, if you drive off gently on level ground. Are the wheels sinking or just spinning? Then stop and call us. Carrying on usually makes it worse and can damage the clutch or the tyres.

What does it cost to have a car pulled off the verge?

That depends on the location, the time and whether the car can still be driven afterwards. Call 058 30 30 125 for an indication of the price. After an accident, car insurance often covers the towing.

Do you also help when a truck is stuck on the verge?

Yes. For trucks, buses and agricultural machinery we use heavy recovery trucks with heavy-duty winches. Read more on our heavy-duty recovery page.
