Safety

Slid off the road: what to do first

Switch on your hazard lights and put on a high-visibility vest. Stand behind the crash barrier or well away from the road, because other cars can skid too when it is slippery. Is anyone injured? Call 112 immediately.

Don't try to drive the car out of the snow or the verge by giving it a lot of throttle. On ice and snow the wheels spin and the car often sinks further. Call us and we will pull it free safely.

Winter rush

Many calls in winter weather

When there is a sudden snow shower or freezing rain, recovery companies get a lot of calls in a short time. Our control room then spreads the recovery trucks across all calls as well as possible.

Are you in a safe place? Then at very busy times it may take a little longer for us to reach you. Wait somewhere safe and keep your phone at hand.

Trucks and buses

For heavy vehicles too

When it is slippery, trucks and buses also leave the road or can no longer get up a slope or slip road. With our heavy recovery trucks and winches we pull them free in a controlled way.

Situations we help with include

  • Cars that have slid onto the verge or into a ditch in snow or ice
  • Cars that can no longer get moving on a slippery road or slope
  • Damage after a collision caused by slippery roads
  • Trucks and buses that are stuck in winter weather

How it works

How we help you in slippery conditions

1. Get to safety

Hazard lights on, vest on and behind the crash barrier. If anyone is injured, call 112 first.

2. Call 058 30 30 125

Tell us where you are and whether the car is still on the carriageway.

3. Recovery

We pull the car free or load it onto the recovery truck.

4. What happens next

To your garage, the dealer or our storage facility. A replacement vehicle can be arranged.

Frequently asked questions

Who pays for the towing if I slide off the road in icy conditions?

That goes through your own car insurance, as with any other single-vehicle accident. Many policies cover towing, even if you only have third-party (WA) cover. This varies by policy.

What should I keep in my car in winter weather?

A warm coat or blanket, a charged phone, a high-visibility vest, an ice scraper and something to drink. That way you can wait safely if you unexpectedly come to a standstill.

Can you also recover a truck that is stuck because of ice?

Yes. We use our heavy recovery trucks with heavy-duty winches for this. Read more on our heavy-duty recovery page.
